Buzz Aldrin's Cycling Pathways to Mars VR Experience

Photogrammetry is the process of obtaining incredibly high quality 3d models through obtaining depth information from a series of photos. I have recently been experimenting with this process on my own, attempting to capture 3d models of a few things around the home - it's so very cool, and very much the future.

Well, as I was browsing through the Oculus Rift store, an experience caught my eye, and I gave it a go - "Buzz Aldrin - Cycling Pathways to Mars" - I gave it a chance it it proved to be one of the best VR experiences I have encountered.

Buzz Aldrin is captured as a hologram - a three dimensional model that was captured live, moving as he speaks - In the past, this process was used to capture a 3d model - which would then be rigged up with a skeleton in post-production - and animated through third party motion capture - well, the future is nearly now - this can be done live with the actor's original body movements. What you see in the hologram was what really occurred in the capture process. This tech will transform the world, allowing physical reality to be incorporated in VR. More to follow on this subject. Stay tuned.

This VR Experience was enjoyed on the Oculus Rift - as it uses full 6DOF - six degrees of freedom - much more than a 360 video.
